Dnešné e-business infraštruktúry vyžadujú riešenia informačných technológií, ktoré môžu splniť stále rastúce nároky s vysokou spoľahlivosťou a jednoduchou správou. Navyše klienti chcú riešenia, ktoré ponúkajú škálovateľnosť rastúcu s ich podnikaním, možnosť rýchlo rozvíjať a implementovať nové služby, a samozrejme tieto výhody za rozumnú cenu. Pre mnoho klientov je odpoveď clustering.
Clustering bol hybnou silou mnohých na svete najsilnejších vedeckých super počítačov po mnoho rokov a teraz sa čoraz viac využíva ako nákladovo-efektívny spôsob, ako poskytovať vysoký výkon, vysokú dostupnosť výpočtovej techniky pre širokú škálu operácií takých ako napríklad je business intelligence, inžinierske konštrukcie, finančné analýzy, digitálne média, ropný prieskum…
Clustering je postup pripojenia viacerými procesormi alebo viacerých serverov spolupracujúcich na zložitých operáciách zjednotením výpočtových zdrojov. Chová sa ako jediný veľký zdroj, a portfóliových systém ponúka mnoho výhod pre moderné e-business prostredia vrátane:
- High processing capacity – kombináciou sily z viacerých serverov, cluster systémov je možné riešiť veľké a zložité operácie. Jeden klient dokázal skrátiť čas na kľúčových inžinierskych prácach z dní na hodiny, a tým skrátiť čas dodania svojho nového produktu na trh.
- Resource consolidation – v jedinom clustri môžu fungovať viacnásobné operácie a môžu sa líšiť prideleným výkonom na spracovanie prideleným jednotlivým pracovným operáciám tak ako požadujú. To je dôvod prečo je cluster ideálny pre konsolidáciu zdrojov a optimalizáciu využitia zdrojov.
- Optimal use of resources – jednotlivé systémy zvyčajne zvládnu jedinú pracovnú operáciu a musia mať také kapacity, aby vyhovovali požiadavkám s ohľadom na očakávanú špičku záťaže, čo znamená, že bežne pracujú na nižšej výkonovej kapacite, ale ešte môžu “run out”, keď dopyt prevyšuje kapacitu, aj keď iné systémy bežia naprázdno. - 24 x 7 availability with failover protection – vzhľadom k tomu, že spracovanie pracovných operácií je rozložené na viacerých strojoch, cluster systémy sú veľmi tolerantné k chybám alebo poruchám. Ak jeden systém zlyhá, ostatné neustále pracujú.
- Disaster recovery – clastre môžu siahať do viacerých geografických lokalít, takže aj keď zlyhá celá lokálna časť strojov alebo nastane výpadok prúdu alebo iné katastrofy, vzdialené stroje budú neustále pracovať.
- Horizontal and vertical scalability without downtime - s rastom obchodných požiadavkov je možný jednoduchý rast procesového výkonu a to pridaním do clastra bez prerušenia prevádzky.
- Centralized system management – nástroje, ktoré umožňujú nasadenie, údržbu a kontrolu veľkých, distribuovaných clastrov z jediného bodu kontroly.
