Ide o internetovú dátovú službu, ktorej princípom je poskytovanie herných on-line serverov pre rôzne druhy on-line počítačových hier. Poskytovatelia herných on-line serverov sa nazývajú gamehosteri, ide zväčša o spoločnosti, ktoré majú v oblasti hier a internetu veľa znalostí, ktoré dokážu zúročiť v poskytovaných službách. Herné on-line servery, označované aj ako gameservery sú služby prevádzkované za poplatky na výkonných serveroch gamehosterských spoločností .
Aký zmysel má gamehosting vo svete internetu?
Pre obyčajného bežného človeka, napríklad websurfera, v podstate žiadny. Gamehosting oslovuje zväčša nižšiu vekovú skupinu ľudí, ktorá sa venuje hraniu on-line počítačových hier. Ide o skupinu ľudí vo veku od zhruba 13 rokov až po zhruba 25 rokov. Aký je princíp fungovania herného servera?
Herný server, je vlastne špeciálna herná aplikácia, ktorá je spustená na operačnom systéme servera. Táto aplikácia funguje v podstate ako bod spojenia hráčov. Hráči sa na tento bod spojenia pripoja a hrajú on-line počítačovú hru medzi sebou.
Aké základné veci si treba všímať pri výbere dobrej gamehostingovej spoločnosti?
1. Spoločnosť by mala mať buď zápis v obchodnom alebo živnostenskom registri. Zvyšuje to jej dôveryhodnosť.

Servery musia byť umiestnené v kvalitnom housingu.
4. Spoločnosť by mala poskytovať možnosť vyskúšať si službu pred jej zakúpením aspoň na 48 hodín.
5. Cenovo by sa malo jedno miesto pripojenia (1 slot) pohybovať niekde okolo 0.50 € / 15 SKK avšak existuje mnoho druhov herných aplikácií, preto sa nemožno riadiť všeobecnou cenou za 1 slot. Suma 0.50 € je orientačným bodom, aby budúci zákazník mal predstavu, že ak je cena u konkrétnej gamehostingovej spoločnosti omnoho vyššia alebo naopak omnoho nižšia, musí to mať nejaký dôvod a často krát nižšia cena značí zníženú kvalitu a naopak privysoká značí chamtivosť spoločnosti.
Svojho nového gamehostera si treba vyberať pozorne, treba sa pýtať na názor iných, už skúsenejších hráčov či vedia odporučiť nejakú spoločnosť. Ceny za gameservery sú pomerne dosť nízke, preto sú tieto služby dostupné naozaj každému.
Keď človek nepozná žiadnu gamehostingovú spoločnosť, najlepšie je zavítať na stránku lepšieho herného klanu a pozrieť sa do sekcie sponzori/partneri. Zväčša sa tam niekoľko gamehosterov nachádza. Ak ide o skutočne dobrý herný klan, pre gamehostera je to dobrá referencia ak poskytuje herné servery pre daný klan.
