Približne polovica dátových centier reaguje na hospodársku krízu znižovaním ich rozpočtov v priemere o 15% pre rok 2009. (prieskum AFCO Data Center Institute)
Nie je to však alarmujúci stav. Znížený rast počtu dátových centier, kapacít dátových centier, je síce významný signál pre podniky, ale zatiaľ čo polovica dátových centier rozpočty znižuje, zvyšné zostávajú v očakávaní bez zmien alebo dokonca sa rozširujú. To je dôležité, pretože ešte nedávno, boli dátové centrá známe ako bezodné diery na peniaze.
Manažéri dátových centier, ide predovšetkým o veľké dátové centrá s významnými svetovými firmami, ktorí skracovali rozpočty na rok 2009 sa zamerali najmä na zníženie investícií do IT zariadení o 21%, podpory IT resp. vybavenie dátových centier (napr. chladiace systémy) o 16,5%, a zamestnancov o 14 %.
Prieskum a jeho výsledky pochádzajúce z mája 2008 sú založené na základe odpovedí od 300 manažérov veľkých dátových centier, ktorí tvoria veľkú časť združenia. Ale v reakcii na hospodársky útlm bol vykonaný následný prieskum na konci novembra 2008 s počtom 133 odpovedí. Prieskum tiež zistil, že 86% z manažérov dátových centier rozšíri využitie virtualizácie buď znížením počtu existujúcich alebo znížením potreby nových fyzických serverov.
Na slovenskom trhu serverhousingových služieb zatiaľ necítiť takéto vplyvy a dôsledky hospodárskej krízy, ale je to skôr dané tým, že rozvoj týchto služieb a ich využívanie ďaleko zaostáva za technicky vyspelými krajinami a teda aj napriek kríze v USA a západnej Európe by mal medziročný rast využívania hostingových služieb na Slovensku dosiahnuť minimálne hodnoty roku 2008.
