MySQL je open-source viacvláknový, viac užíateľský SQL databázový server. Vyvíjaný je pre platformy Linux, Windows, Solaris, BSD a ďalšie. MySQL je importovaný do nieľkokých programovacích jazykoch, napr. PHP alebo Perl.
Databázy v MySQL sú tvorené z tabuliek v ktorých sa nachádzajú riadky a stĺpce. V riadkoch sú zaznamenané jednotlivé záznamy, stĺpce údavajú dátový typ jednotlivých záznamov. Procesy v MySQL sa vykonávajú pomocou programovacieho jazyka SQL.
Na administráciu MySQL možno použiť terminál – príkaz mysql alebo mysqladmin. Výrobca dodáva aj GUI administráciu s názvom MySQL Administrator a MySQL Query Browser, oba nástroje na uľahčenie správy MySQL servera sa nachádzajú v balíčku MySQL GUI Tools. Pre správu databázy v prostredí webhosting sa najčastejšie používa phpMyAdmin.
